First, news about nature conservation.

The UN Environment Conference has begun in Yerevan, Armenia.

The meeting will assess how member countries have progressed in achieving common goals to protect nature.

Countries agreed 4 years ago that 30 percent of the Earth’s land and sea areas would be protected by 2030.

Janne Kotiaho, chairman of the Finnish Nature Panel, says that Finland is far behind schedule.

- At this rate, it will take 500 years to reach the 30 percent target.

Fuel subsidy

Then there’s the issue of fuel prices.

The transportation industry says the government’s support for motorists is too little.

The government’s support totals 60 million euros. Half of that is fuel support for the transport sector and agricultural and forestry entrepreneurs.

The support is being provided because the price of gasoline and diesel has risen significantly.

The transportation industry says the support is not enough.

The transport industry also hopes the government will find permanent ways to lower the price of diesel. One way is to reduce fuel taxes.

Sweet potato cultivation

Finally, new information about growing sweet potatoes.

Sweet potatoes can also be grown successfully in Finnish fields.

The University of Helsinki has studied the cultivation of different sweet potato varieties. Some of the varieties produced good yields.

Until now, only a small amount of sweet potatoes have been grown in Finland. The growing season in Finland is short and sweet potatoes require a lot of heat.

In the experimental field, sweet potatoes grew under plastic, as plastic keeps the soil warm and moist.

Sweet potatoes can also thrive in Finnish fields.

There were 8 different varieties in the experiment. The variety that performed best was the one that is pink on the outside and white on the inside.
