Confidence of the Prime Minister and the Government

Politics first.

The Government and Prime Minister Petteri Orpo have received the confidence of Parliament. Parliament met in plenary session yesterday during the summer recess.

The Parliament gave a vote of confidence to the Prime Minister by a vote of 101 to 90 and to the entire government by the same vote.

The vote was held over funding for the Garden Helsinki hall. The government made a conditional funding decision of 35 million euros last year.

The opposition suspected that election funding or lobbying by former National Coalition Minister Jan Vapaavuori influenced the decision.

The debate on the government’s confidence lasted nine hours. Over 180 speeches were made.

The government and the Prime Minister received a vote of confidence.

Verdict on stabbings in Ratina

Then about justice.

The Tampere Ratina mass stabbing suspect has been sentenced. The District Court sentenced him to nine and a half years in prison.

A 24-year-old man was convicted of three counts of attempted murder and one count of aggravated assault.

The court’s dangerousness assessment states that the man is a very dangerous prisoner.

He stabbed four people in Tampere near the Ratina shopping center last summer. The attacker chose them at random.

He was sentenced to 9 and a half years of unconditional imprisonment.

Small nuclear power plants

Finally, about nuclear power.

Four Finnish cities are investigating the construction of small nuclear power plants. They are intended to be used for district heating production.

The project is most advanced in Kuopio in Eastern Finland.

A small nuclear power plant can be closer to a settlement than a large nuclear power plant. Jouni Niemelä is worried if the plant comes close to home.

- Official information says that it would be 280 meters from that house, that it’s definitely coming to the backyard.

The power of one reactor is 50 megawatts. The technology of a small nuclear power plant is the same as that of large nuclear power plants.

In addition to Kuopio, Helsinki, Jyväskylä and Kerava are planning small nuclear power plants.
