Global warming
The topic of the news week is global warming.
This year is the warmest year on record on Earth. The last time the temperature record was broken was last year.
Climatologists say the climate crisis appears to be getting worse
Now we will tell you more about it.
The warmest year in recorded history
The EU’s Copernicus Climate Service says that this year, 2024, has been the warmest year on record.
The Finnish Climate Service says that this year’s average temperature is about 1.5 degrees higher than the pre-industrial average.
This is the first year that the 1.5 degree limit has been exceeded, but we were close to it last year too.
This year, November in particular was unusually warm. The average temperature in November was just over 1.6 degrees Celsius higher than in pre-industrial times.
The Paris target is unlikely to be met
The world’s countries are striving to stop global warming.
In 2015, the Paris Climate Agreement agreed to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. This means that all countries must reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Climate scientists say that reaching the target seems highly unlikely. Rather, it seems that the climate crisis is getting worse.
Global warming is intensifying, for example, extreme weather events. The world is experiencing more and worse storms and floods, heavy rains, droughts and heat waves.
The birds have become smaller
Global warming is also reflected in plants and animals, who are forced to adapt or move to new areas as their habitat changes.
For example, researchers in Finland and Sweden have observed that birds have become smaller. Their weight has dropped and their wings have shortened.
Scientists say it’s due to global warming. Smaller birds are doing better than larger ones in mild winter weather.
Repetition
The topic of the week in the news was global warming. Let’s recap a few things.
This year is the warmest year in recorded history.
The annual average temperature now exceeds the Paris Climate Agreement target of 1.5 degrees for the first time.
Climate scientists say the climate crisis may be getting worse.
