Finland’s Independence Day was celebrated yesterday, Friday. On the evening of Independence Day, the Castle Party was organized in the Presidential Palace.
However, there was a valuable celebration at the Presidential Palace already on Monday during the day. That’s when President Alexander Stubb and Mrs. Suzanne Innes-Stubb invited war veterans and lots to the Presidential Palace.
A special day party was organized for veterans and lots, because they are really old. The day party was peaceful, and the presidential couple had time to talk with the guests.
President Stubb gave a speech at the celebration. The president thanked the veterans and the soldiers who saved Finland’s independence.

Who are veterans? Veterans were soldiers in the Finnish army during World War II.
The war started in Finland 85 years ago. In the winter of 1939-1940, the Winter War was fought. The continuation war was in 1941-1944.
The war started when the Soviet Union, or Russia, attacked little Finland. It was a miracle that Finland’s independence was preserved.
Today it is said that the veterans saved Finland’s independence. They fought for all of us.
The veterans are already old, many around 100 years old. At the beginning of this year, there were about 2,000 veterans alive. The number is decreasing rapidly.

And who are the lotas? Lotas are women who performed important tasks during the war.
Lotas, for example, prepared food for the army and cared for soldiers who were wounded in the war.
