The Paralympics are currently competing in the French capital, Paris. Athletes with a disability take part in the competitions. The athlete has a movement disability, visual impairment or developmental disability.
There are a total of 22 different sports at the Paris Paralympics. Sports include, for example, athletics, swimming, cycling and horse riding.

Finns at the Paris Paralympics
16 Finnish athletes will participate in the Paris Paralympics. Finland’s goal at the Games is 6 medals. Finnish athletes will compete in Paris in 6 different sports.
The Finnish team includes, for example, Leo-Pekka Tähti and Toni Piispanen. Tähti and Piispanen’s sport is track winding. They have previously won many medals at the Paralympics. Leo-Pekka Tähti and Toni Piispanen will end their racing careers after the Paris Paralympics.
At the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, Finland received a total of 5 medals. At the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, Finnish athletes won 4 medals.
History of para sports
The history of para sports, i.e. disabled sports, is connected to the Second World War. After the war, many people had some sort of disability. They wanted to organize sports competitions for people with physical disabilities.
The Paralympics were held for the first time in Rome in 1960. Today, the games are held every 2 years. The races take place alternately in summer and winter. The Paralympics are always held in the same city and in the same year as the Olympics.
