The refugee of the year is selected by Suomen Pakolaisapu. It is an approximately 60-year-old organization that works for refugees and immigrants.

26 years ago Suomen Pakolaisapu started giving out an award, which was then called Refugee Woman of the Year. In the years 2016-2022, Refugee Man of the Year was also chosen.

Since last year, only one recipient of the award has been chosen again, who will therefore become the Refugee of the Year.

Suomen Pakolaisapu gives the award to a person with a refugee background and experience with integration.
