March strikes

The topic of the news week is the March strikes. New strikes will start in Finland on Monday. They last 2 weeks. Now we will tell you how strikes affect people’s lives and what is the cause of strikes.

Workers’ unions start new strikes. The strikes will start on Monday, March 11.

About 7,000 workers are on strike. They are off work for up to 2 weeks.

Strikes affect transport. Freight traffic stops on railways and ports.

Because of the strikes, it is therefore not possible to export goods from Finland abroad. Importing from abroad to Finland is also difficult.

The March strikes are visible in people’s lives, for example, so that gasoline may run out at some gas stations. That’s why many motorists have filled up the tank before the strike.

However, gasoline does not run out completely during the strike. Motorists therefore do not need to buy gasoline for storage.

Some foreign foodstuffs, for example fruit, may also run out of stores. However, most of the products in the stores are Finnish, and they are also available during the strike.

Earlier in the winter there were strikes in Finland that stopped buses and trains and closed kindergartens. Now that won’t happen. Traffic is working and daycare centers are open even during the strike.

Protest to the government

The March strikes are political. For example, trade unions do not demand more pay. They organize strikes because they oppose government policies.

The government plans to change working life in many ways. The government wants, for example, that the employee does not receive a salary from the 1st day of sick leave.

The government also wants to limit political strikes. The government believes that political strikes harm the Finnish economy.

The government’s plan is that the political strike may last only 24 hours. 2-week political strikes may no longer be possible in the future.

Repeat

The topic of the news week was political strikes. Let’s repeat the most important things.

Strikes will begin on Monday, which will especially affect transportation.

During the strike, gasoline and some food items may be on sale less than usual.

The workers’ unions oppose the government’s policy with strikes.
